In 1963 Chevrolet launched the C2 (2nd generation) Corvette, with many upgrades over the previous generation, including for the first time a non-convertible version. With the now fully-enclosed cockpit the Corvette became the perfect foundation for a street-legal race car, and a new performance packagenamed Z06was created to exploit this potential. After a many-year hiatus, the Z06 package returned in 2001 for the C5 generation Corvettes, and again in 2006 for the C6 generation. As in 1963, the current Z06 is available only with a fixed-roof, and again delivers a truly race-worthy street car. The Z06 retains much of the base C6s amenities but adds a laundry list of performance enhancing changes, including a 7.0L 505hp engine, a dry sump oil system, an aluminum frame, and various carbon fiber elements. Available for a fraction of the cost of the European exotics, the Corvette Z06 easily holds its own and is truly an American supercar.
